    At the time of the Troubles, Unionists (Protestants) were a majority in Northern Ireland and they didn't want to leave the UK. So this guy Paddy Short in effect wanted to go against the majority there and compel them to reunite with Ireland against their wishes.

    He could do with reading a good history book. First of all Ireland was not a country, it was six kingdoms, who lived in conflict with each other. Then one of the kingdoms decided to attack England, raiding our coastal towns and slaughtering the entire populations of them. Eventually we invaded that Kingdom, and went on though it to take the rest. That's when Ireland became one country, when the English made it one country.

    I'm not gonna get into the history too much because it's pretty complicated. Ulster was a plantation (that was the original word for it) in the sense that the British government (usually called England) 'planted' people from Scotland and England in Northern Ireland in what we'd understand now (and probably then) as colonialism with the interests of eliminating the Irish (natives) to make the land profitable for Britain (England). This happened in Scotland, Wales, North America, India, New Zealand, Australia, Africa, etc. It's a form of limited genocide. So yes, as an Englishman, I can see why all these people were fucked off to say the least. We need to have a true history of british imperialism that is taught so that people realise my nation weren't benign bringers of law and civility to 'savages', they were invaders who tried to systematically eradicate the peoples and countries of whom they invaded.

      If you wanted to have a discussion, you'd have to have a fair discussion. This isn't a fair discussion it's completely one sided. For example. this conversation is only possible because the British invented the internet. And the computer. You'd have to acknowledge the many benefits Britain brought the world while also discussing the trouble that Britain caused. But I doubt very much you'd be capable of such an impartial analysis, because you've written here they "tried to systematically eradicate" peoples. Britain never tried to do that. They governed India with about 1000 civil servants, as if they were trying to eradicate the entire population! You would do well to read Nigel Biggar for a fairer accounting of the Empire.

    Had to partition it. No choice.

    •  3 дні тому

      Partition didn't need to happen. Partition only happened as the Ulster Unionists threatened rebellion. The UK government supinely agreed to partition instead of standing up to the threat of rebellion from unionists.

    • @Pdmc-vu5gj
      @Pdmc-vu5gj 3 дні тому

      It had to happen. No way Catholic Ireland in the 1920s would have been able to govern a million Protestants. It would have been the troubles x 300 and would have destroyed the early Irish state. Which was unstable to begin with.

    •  3 дні тому

      @@Pdmc-vu5gj I disagree. With imagination about governing structures in Ireland (e.g., strong local government, petitions of concern), as well as equality and secularisation laws, it would have been possible to have an Irish parliament for all of Ireland within the UK. That is how the Scottish Parliament is and there is no threat of partition of Scotland. The UK Tories played the Orange card to encourage rebellion in Ulster. That added petrol to a fire that could have been gently quenched. One needs to remember, that despite the differences between nationalists and unionists, there is actually more in common between as we all live in the same land. With time, shared interests and co-operation would have ensured that peace and progress would have happened. Look at Northern Ireland now, the imagination about governing structures (a joint first minister, power-sharing, petition of concern, etc.,), and equality laws make Northern Ireland more or less stable, despite not being reconciled. The reconciliation will happen little by little as the stability lasts. Partition was not a success. It entrenched divisions rather than diminished them.

    • @Pdmc-vu5gj
      @Pdmc-vu5gj 2 дні тому

      I would agree in modern times it may occur.... although the Irish healthcare system is a shambles and other practical issues....But not in the 1920s when Ireland was initially formed. The Catholic Church was too powerful (and provincial) in that era in terms of government influence..

    •  2 дні тому

      @@Pdmc-vu5gj But if 30% of the population of Ireland was Protestant, it would have been difficult for the Catholic Church to be able to be so powerful. When partition happened, most of the Protestant population of Ireland was excluded from the 26 counties that became the Irish state. It made it much easier for the Catholic Church to influence the Irish government. Most of the concerns about home rule were really about economic matters rather than religious matters. North-east Ireland was the area that was most industrialised and Belfast was then the biggest city in Ireland. The Ulster Unionists didn't want to be cut off from their main market which was Britain. Nationalists wanted to have an Irish parliament which would impose customs and import tariffs on trade with Britain as a way to exercise control and to raise funds. It's likely that there would have been violence from some but with time, unionists would have had a determining role in an Irish parliament as they make up about 20% of the population of Ireland.
